Basic Program Online Course

Studying on-line

WHAT IT IS: The Basic Program is an FPMT in-depth study program of nine important texts in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of Lama Tzong Khapa. The online course parallels the two-year full-time onsite Basic Program held at Lama Tzong Khapa Institute from January 16th, 2012 to December 13th, 2013.

While the audio recordings of the teachings given by the residential program teachers, including Dagri Rinpoche, will be made available to on-line students, weekly review classes specifically created for on-line students will be taught by a Western teacher, who takes into account the needs and limited time available to students with full-time jobs and family responsibilities.

The online course consists in weekly classes in audio format, supplemented by guidelines for meditations in audio/text format, reading materials, regular quizzes, a forum for discussion, and service projects aimed at benefitting others.

The January 2012 to December 2013
Basic Program at Lama Tzong Khapa Institute
is the first university accredited Basic Program in the FPMT
.

For information about the accreditation.

FOR WHO: The Basic Program is an in-depth program of study and practice and applicants should have already acquired some familiarity with the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism through participating in introductory and intermediate level courses and study programs such as Discovering Buddhism and the Foundations of Buddhist Thought. As the main language of the program is English, applicants must also have an acceptable level of English. Applicants are not required to possess a university degree.

BY WHOM: The weekly classes for the online course are taught by Ven. Kevin Middleton, a graduate of the intensive residential Basic Program held at Lama Tzong Khapa Institute in 2005-2007. Kevin has also successfully completed two of the main subjects of the Masters Program in Buddhist Studies - the Ornament for Clear Realizations and Supplement to the Middle Way, giving him an excellent basis for teaching the more advanced subjects of the Basic Program. Kevin also previously taught the Stages of the Path – one of the main subjects of the Basic Program – as an online course organized by the Institute in collaboration with a Buddhist study group in the Czech Republic. The audio recordings of teachings given by the teachers of the full-time Basic Program, which include Dagri Rinpoche, Geshe Tenzin Tenphel, Geshe Jampa Gelek, Gavin Kility, and Glen Svensson are available to online students.

WHERE: Audio recordings of teachings and all other study materials – video, audio, and text files – as well as online quizzes and the forum are found on Lama Tzong Khapa Institute’s on-line learning site (iltkonline.iltk.org). Online students are also welcome to attend the five optional complementary three-day seminars on topics related to Mind Science which are organized each year at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies (1 credit each).

WHEN: The eight accredited modules and the additional module Grounds and Paths of Secret Mantra (a one-month summer intensive in 2013) take place over a period of two years (23 January 2012 to 13 December 2013).
