Logic and Debate
A pedagogical approach to the study of Buddhism. Dialectics as a method for studying and understanding phenomena.

From the teachings of the Buddha to contemporary teachings, and in particular those of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Buddhist study encourages students to examine statements through analysis and reasoning, rather than accepting them on the basis of faith alone.

In the context of Buddhist studies, logic and the dialectical method are tools used to deepen one’s understanding of the teachings. Once learned, they can be applied to the study of Buddhist texts and, more broadly, to processes of analysis, dialogue, and reflection.

The Logic and Debate project was established at the Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa and now continues in collaboration with the Study Center of the Italian Buddhist Union. The program alternates periods of online study with intensive in-person sessions, including classes, personal study, memorization, reasoning exercises, and debate practice.

The cost of participating in the retreat is included in the fee for the Debate School. However, we suggest making an offering to help cover the costs of organization and management.

The Retreat

The summer retreat is reserved for students enrolled in the Logic and Debate program, including students from previous cycles and students enrolled in the Three-Year School.

The retreat will be led by Atisha Mathur and Ven. Lobsang Kunsang, with activities in both Italian and English.

Sabrina Zanetti and Henrik Frölund will be present on site as tutors, supporting students during study sessions and debate practice.

Indicative Retreat Schedule

First Day

6:00 – 7:30 PM
Introduction to the retreat, presentation of the program, and organization of the study and debate groups.

Intermediate Days

9:00 – 10:30 AM Debate

10:30 AM – 12:30 PM Class with the teacher

12:30 – 2:30 PM Lunch and rest

2:30 – 4:30 PM Personal study

4:30 – 5:30 PM Break

5:30 – 7:30 PM Debate practice

7:30 – 8:30 PM Dinner

Final Day

The morning of the final day will be dedicated to the conclusion of the retreat and closing activities.

The retreat is reserved for students enrolled in the Logic and Debate program. Students enrolled in the program may attend the retreat free of charge; however, those who are able to do so are invited to make an offering in support of the retreat organization.

During the registration process, it will be possible to adjust the amount of the offering in the “confirm and pay” section. In addition to the suggested amounts, there will be a free-entry field where participants may indicate the amount they wish to offer, or leave the amount at zero.

Sabrina Zanetti

Sabrina Zanetti is a tutor for the Italian-language group of the Logic & Debate program. During the retreat, she will support students during personal study sessions and debate practice, helping with the organization of daily study activities and group exercises.

Henrik Frölund

Henrik Frölund is a tutor for the English-language group of the Logic & Debate program. During the retreat, he will support students during personal study sessions and debate practice, helping with the organization of daily study activities and group exercises.
